Broncos fans in attendance Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee, had to wait a little longer than expected to hear who their team would select in the first round of the NFL Draft. An hour after the team first went on the clock, the Broncos finally turned in their draft card.

That's because 10 picks earlier, Denver traded the 10th selection to the Pittsburgh Steelers for the 20th pick, an extra second rounder this year and a third-round pick in 2020.

Multiple good players came off the board during the 10 picks in between Denver's original selection and its new one. However, it was seemingly worth the wait when the team selected Iowa tight end, Noah Fant.

“He was one of the first guys I watched,” said Broncos coach Vic Fangio via the team's website, “and obviously he can run. That’s the first thing that jumps out at you. But he’s a competitive blocker also, which is part of his job description being a tight end. We don’t feel he’s just a move tight end or an off-the-ball tight end. He can play on the line of scrimmage also. That was important to us.”

Fant now comes to Denver with an opportunity to earn a big role in the offense as a rookie. How big will that role be?

“That’s going to be up to him,” Fangio said. “He’s going to have to come in here and compete with the other guys that we have at the position. They’ve had a four-week head start on him.
