The Kansas City Chiefs officially kickstarted the NFL offseason with a blockbuster trade that sent three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins in exchange for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a third-round pick. As a result, Washington has essentially given their answer to the conundrum surrounding quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Cousins will now be the biggest free agent on the market this offseason. However, it seems the Denver Broncos may have already gotten a step up on the competition, according to Fox Sports Radio personality Colin Cowherd via Steven Spector of Fescoe in the Morning on 610 Sports:

Despite Cowherd's early optimism, there does not seem to be any movement from both sides just yet, according to Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports Radio AM1340:

Just talked to a Broncos exec. Told him, there's a rumor that the team is “close to a deal with Kirk Cousins.” Exec's response: “If that's the case, it's news to us.” Doesn't mean they're not going after him. Just means the rumor, right now, is just a rumor.

Although the Broncos still have yet to take the initiative on Cousins, it is likely that it will only be a matter of time before they do. Denver's quarterback woes were largely the reason behind their disastrous 2017 season. Furthermore, players like star linebacker Von Miller have been vocal about their support for Cousins since the end of the regular season.

However, general manager John Elway has expressed interest in potentially going young once again with the fifth pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Needless to say, the Broncos have some crucial decisions to make at quarterback this offseason.
