A report from earlier on Monday indicated the Detroit Lions were attempting to trade three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay. Now a new rumor surfaced later Monday that the Denver Broncos already tried to snatch Slay away from the Lions' claws.

Per 9News Denver's Mike Klis on Twitter, the Broncos attempted to trade veteran cornerback Chris Harris Jr. at the NFL's trade deadline during the 2019 season in a deal surrounding the 29-year-old Slay. Reportedly, the Lions wanted another high draft pick along with Harris Jr.

Earlier on Monday ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Lions are shopping the 30-year-old Slay; however, the veteran defensive back is looking for a new deal in addition to Detroit's draft pick compensation in order to complete a trade this offseason.

Slay, a seven-year vet in Detroit's secondary originally selected by the Lions in the second round of the 2013 draft out of Mississippi State, will be a free agent this offseason, too, so the chances of the NFC North franchise completing a trade in order to regain some compensation are looking slim since they were unable to get a deal done during the trade deadline with, for example, in the latest report, the Broncos.

Slay led the league in interceptions with eight during the 2017 season, playing all 16 games that year. In the past two seasons Slay has combined for five picks and two fumble recoveries along with 76 solo tackles in 29 games. Nevertheless, the Lions have only gone 9-22-1 during that span and have been trending down, and possess the third overall pick in the 2020 draft in April.
