Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett shined in his first season playing alongside Jadeveon Clowney last year, and the NFL may not have seen the best out of this duo just yet.

From Garrett’s standpoint, he sees that he will go on to excel with Clowney in the upcoming 2022 campaign if the former Houston Texans defensive end “comes back in shape.”

“We were probably the best duo in the league as far as getting pressure, not always completing the play,” Garrett said on Wednesday. “I know teams like to get it out a little bit quick against us, but trying to put pressure on them, getting hands up, just his athleticism, the wingspan, causing guys trouble.

“It’s a special combo, and if he comes back in shape, I think we’ll be able to do something really, really special this year as well.”

Fitness concerns have not been much of an issue for Clowney as of late. He was deemed to be in great shape heading into his debut campaign with the Browns last year, which paid off in the end as he tallied 9.0 sacks in 14 regular season games played.

Following a notable wait, Clowney opted to re-sign with the Browns on a mere one-year deal last month. There was much outside speculation that Browns general manager Andrew Berry would not push to bring the veteran pass rusher back after he selected former UAB defensive end Alex Wright in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. However, he still elected to re-sign him, which came after Garrett made clear of his desire to see this move come to fruition.

The Browns recorded 43 total sacks in the 2021 regular season, with a combined 25 of them coming from Garrett and Clowney.
