Baker Mayfield may never return to the field as a member of the Cleveland Browns. He implied as much as he spoke today to the media.

If Deshaun Watson is suspended for the whole season, which is something the NFL reportedly wants to happen, Mayfield does not anticipate starting for the Browns this year.

“No, I think for that to happen, there would have to be some reaching out,” Mayfield said at his youth football camp in Oklahoma Tuesday morning. “But we’re ready to move on, I think, on both sides.”

Watson, the new Cleveland Browns quarterback, was present for his disciplinary hearing today. The impartial official jointly chosen by the NFL and NFLPA is District Judge Sue L. Robinson. According to sources, the NFL notified Watson, Robinson, and the NFL Players Association at least ten days ago that it is recommending an extended ban for Watson of at least one year.

If that ends up being the case, the Browns will likely start backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett and will keep pursuing a trade for Mayfield. Baker requested a trade on March 17th.

On the flip side, the Carolina Panthers could possibly trade for Mayfield. In such a case, they would presumably pick up approximately half of his fully guaranteed $18.86 million contract. There are also whispers of a possible deal between the Browns and the Seattle Seahawks.

The Browns drafted Baker Mayfield as the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He entered the league as the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner. The Austin, Texas native had a great rookie season, being named Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week seven times. He also holds the Browns franchise record for most passing yards per game in a season when he threw for 266.1 yards per game in 2018.
