The Cleveland Browns are re-signing Phillip Gaines, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

He was claimed off waiver by the Browns in November. In the four games he played with Cleveland last season, he made only nine tackles. He was relegated primarily on special teams due to his unfamiliarity with their system.

The Browns could use an upgrade at cornerback to start opposite their rookie sensation Denzel Ward. It is possible that T.J. Carrie and Terrance Mitchell will compete for that job.

As of now, Phillip Gaines has been brought back to compete for a backup role. But his familiarity with the Browns' organization is what ultimately brought him back.

Gaines was a third-round pick of the Chiefs in 2014 and played for the Bills for half of last season. Though his career has not taken off, he brings valuable experience to any locker room. He'll be needed to help improve the 25th-ranked passing defense of the Browns.

They claimed him from the Bills last season for a reason. They like his potential and the things he has shown so far in his career.

In his six seasons in the NFL, he made 139 tackles, one interception, 16 passes defensed, and two forced fumbles. He has also made 22 starts in 52 games in his career.

With one Gaines brought back on the roster, the Brown could also be interested in re-signing EJ Gaines down the road. Either way, they're doing everything they can to help improve their defense. The pieces are in place and the Browns might see Phillip Gaines as a player in their long-term plans.

The details of his contracts are not disclosed.
