The Cleveland Browns got some rough news today following practice.

Browns cornerback Kevin Johnson remains in the hospital tonight following a scary situation during a play. On a diving pass drill, rookie tight end Harrison Bryant along with Johnson went for the ball, with Bryant landing on top of Johnson, lacerating his liver with the impact.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital after the incident, which head coach Kevin Stefanski credited the team’s medical team for recognizing the potential seriousness of the incident and sending him to the hospital.

“The defensive staff would have preferred that he held back instead out of an abundance of caution and not dive for it, but they kind of both dove and Harrison landed on top of him,” Stefanski said. “Really unfortunate, unlucky. Hoping for him, that he will be back when he is ready. Really the most important thing right now is that he is safe, and we want him to get well very soon.”

The team says he is resting comfortably at the hospital, but will stay at least for another 24 hours for observation. There is no indication of how severe the laceration is and how much time Johnson will miss.

This is the latest in a series of blows to the Browns throughout the first week of training camp. On Monday Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb suffered a concussion on the first day with full pads. A day later linebacker Mack Wilson, who gave Chubb the concussion, hyperextended his left knee and is expected to miss an extended period of time.
