The Cleveland Browns have an obvious need for talent on the receiving corps. Any capable player who can catch a football for a good couple of years would be a great addition to a team with a quarterback that badly needs targets.

Austin Hooper is one of the acquisitions the Browns made with that thing in mind.

It seems that the reason for the deal was quite simple: Hooper could provide the yards the Browns badly needed. If there's one thing Hooper has proven over his time with the Falcons, it's that he has the ability to convert passes into positive yards and touchdowns.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler wrote more about the situation with the Browns:

“That offense needs easy yards over the middle and help in the red zone,” one NFL exec said. “They had to go out and get him. He's not a superstar but is a quality tight end.”

David Njoku definitely flopped hard over the past season. He was expected to show up and stand out during Baker Mayfield's second season, but he only managed to play four games as he was injured for much of the season. With no solid alternative at the position, it made sense for the Browns to get Hooper.

Hooper played incredibly well during his final year with the Falcons, notching 787 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns. He was one of the few standout players in an otherwise terrible season. Hopefully, the four-year, $42-million contract they gave him will work out just fine.
