Jadeveon Clowney is still a free agent, but the Cleveland Browns are trying to re-sign him and apparently feel “optimistic” about those prospects, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler notes that a Clowney return to the Browns “makes a lot of sense” for both sides:

Clowney had a bounce-back season in Cleveland in 2021. After making the Pro Bowl three straight years with the Houston Texans, Clowney disappointed with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019 and then the Tennessee Titans in 2020. In fact, he didn't record a single sack in eight games with Tennessee.

But then Clowney signed with the Browns in 2021 to play opposite Myles Garrett, and he looked more like his Pro Bowl self. Clowney racked up 9.0 sacks on the season, matching his mark from his last Pro Bowl season in 2018.

Given his performance in 2021, it certainly makes sense for Cleveland to want him back. Clowney and Garrett make for an excellent pass-rushing duo, and the Browns should want to keep that together.

Cleveland is trying to bounce back as a team after a disappointing 2021 campaign. The Browns made a blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson to replace Baker Mayfield, though it's unclear if Watson will be eligible to play to start the season because of his legal problems. Either way, having a top-level defense would make life easier for the team, and bringing Clowney back plays into that.

Stay tuned to see if Clowney returns to Cleveland.
