A bit of bad news for Cleveland Browns tight end Darren Fells today, as the news about his release has just been made official.

Fells was only with the team for one season, according to SB Nation. Initially, his contract — which was signed when he was an unrestricted free agent — was set to last for three years. However, they were merely hoping that he would be a blocking tight end — and the team got a lot more than that out of him.

He caught eight of the nine passes thrown his way, with three of them going for touchdowns. One of those touchdowns was a 49-yarder from quarterback Baker Mayfield in Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders – the first touchdown pass of Mayfield’s NFL career.

The Browns will now carry $1.4 million in dead money after the release of Fells becomes official. It remains to be seen how that money will ultimately be used by the Browns.

With that said, Fells needn't worry about being on the market for too long. Since there aren't many tight ends currently in free agency, he should be snapped up rather quickly.

As for Fells' former team, now it seems extremely likely that the Browns will target the tight end position, either in free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft.

It will be interesting to see if the Browns end up snapping him up when the Draft or the free agency opens for him, but as always, we will keep you apprised of all the developments.
