The Cleveland Browns have announced that wide receiver Josh Gordon has signed his one-year exclusive rights tender worth $790,000 to stay with the team for the upcoming season.

Gordon was one of four players to sign, joining fellow receiver Matt Hazel, offensive lineman Austin Reither, and fullback Danny Vitale.

Gordon, 27, was the Browns’ second-round pick in the 2012 supplemental draft. However, he has only appeared in 40 games over four seasons due to multiple suspensions stemming from substance abuse-related violations.

After missing the last two full seasons due to those suspensions, Gordon made a successful return to the NFL last year with Cleveland. He showed flashes of his old form, catching 18 passes for 335 yards (18.6 yards per reception) and a touchdown in five games.

When he’s got his head focused on football, Gordon has shown the ability to be a superstar-caliber wide receiver in the league. He was remarkable in the 2013 season as he led the league with 1,646 yards on 87 catches with nine touchdowns in just 14 games. However, his substance abuse problems have prevented him from fulfilling that incredible potential.

The Browns will be hoping he can finally do so starting this season. Gordon will join a young and talented receiving corps that also features Jarvis Landry, who’s fresh off his massive contract extension, and former first-round pick Corey Coleman. New starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor has the ability to throw an excellent deep ball, which Gordon can capitalize upon if he can stay on the field.

If Gordon can be on his best behavior this season, it may not be long until he goes from signing a one-year deal to a lucrative long-term contract.
