The Cleveland Browns and Myles Garrett have reportedly begun preliminary talks on an extension this offseason.

Cleveland's Vice President, Glenn Cook, spoke about Garrett's future with the franchise on a Zoom conference call on Thursday:

“Myles is a really good player,‘' Cook said on a Zoom conference call Thursday. “Personally, I’d love to have him for as long as we can. Those are decisions that Andrew, (Vice President of Football Operations) Kwesi (Adofo-Mensah) and ownership have to make. I can’t give you an update. I think Andrew will be the better person to speak on that, but I can tell you, as you probably know, we are really excited to have him on our team and hopefully, have him for a long time.”

Throughout his first three seasons in the NFL, Garrett has been nothing short of dominant for the Browns. The former first-round pick out of Texas A&M has amassed 30.5 sacks, 65 quarterback hits, and six forced fumbles since 2017.

Earlier this offseason, the Browns hired Andrew Berry as their new general manager, along with hiring Kevin Stefanski at head coach. Despite Cook having a say in the team's operations, he reiterates that Berry would have more to say on Garrett's contract status.

At the same time, Cleveland is aware of the possible cap space decrease in 2021 due to the COVID-19 implications:

“All of that goes into play when we’re talking about any of these moves that we’re looking to make, whether it’s extensions, signing free agents, possibly trades or even going into … 2021 and 2022,‘' Cook said. “It does somewhat change what our overall plan is and we actually initially did have some conversations around that just in terms of team planning – not specific to Myles – and just what that looks like given what COVID was saying in February, March or going into the next year.

Garrett figures to command a lucrative contract in the near future. Even though the Browns want to keep Garrett around as long as they can, they are taking a patient approach in contract talks.
