Despite previous reports that Robert Saleh would stay with the San Francisco 49ers, the Cleveland Browns sign him after all.

The Browns have requested an interview with Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dobbs for their general manager job. That connects with Saleh, as the 49ers defensive coordinator is said to be interested in Dobbs to pair with.

In other words, that could mean Saleh is a favorite to land the Browns' head coaching job.

Saleh is one of the eight candidates that have reportedly interviewed with the Browns.  New England Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Minnesota Vikings OC Kevin Stefanski, Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz are also in the mix. Cleveland met with Mike McCarthy before the Dallas Cowboys hired him.

Saleh's players believe he is fit to be a head coach.

“I 100-percent believe he deserves a head-coaching job. He has done a great job here and he commands the room really well,” 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman said on Wednesday via Scott Bair of NBC Sports Bay Area. “He has a great way of relating to his players and holding them accountable but, it doesn’t matter what I think. The people who make those decisions don’t seem like they’re hiring people of color very often.”

In 2019, Saleh led the NFL's second-best defense in terms of yards allowed (4,509). The 49ers' stout defense helped pave a path to the NFC's top seed.
