Following Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens was asked about his job security, and whether or not he thinks he’ll return as the Browns head coach. Kitchens responded by saying that he didn’t care about his future with the team and was only focused on next week. On Monday, Kitchens made sure to clarify his meaning.

During the coach’s press conference (via Pro Football Talk) on Monday, Kitchens said that he does want to be back for a second season as the Browns head coach. He then went on to say that his intent with the remarks on Sunday was to show that he’s focused instead on what his current tasks are and not potential job security issues.

“I care about my job. I only care, though, about getting better today,” Kitchens said, via Keith Britton of 92.3 The Fan. “That’s what I was trying to illustrated. I’m only focused on today. Dee and Jimmy Haslam, and John Dorsey, would much rather me worry about getting our team ready.”

Kitchens and the Browns have underperformed throughout the 2019 season, a year in which they came into it as playoff hopefuls. Not only will the Browns likely not be making the playoffs, but they also will not be able to have a winning season this year, which continues to add to the futility that the Browns have had to suffer through.

With a wide range of experienced head coaches ready to hit the open market, it’ll be interesting to see if the Browns decide to keep Kitchens following this season.
