Baker Mayfield has not had a good sophomore campaign.

After an impressive rookie season in which Mayfield set the single-season rookie record with 27 touchdown passes, the Cleveland Browns quarterback was expected by many to be a breakout star in 2019, but quite the opposite has happened.

As a matter of fact, Mayfield has significantly regressed, as he has thrown for 3,356 yards, 17 touchdowns and 17 interceptions while completing 60.1 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 78.7 this season.

Mayfield's less-than-stellar performance this season has many questioning whether or not he will ever truly be an elite signal-caller in the NFL, but head coach Freddie Kitchens thinks he will get there eventually.

“He definitely can get to that place and he will get to that place,” said Kitchens, according to Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram. “Baker is a young guy, he's not a finished product. He works his tail off every day.”

Kitchens certainly makes some good points.

It's easy to jump to conclusions after seeing Mayfield have such a horrific year, but it is just his second season in the NFL, and he is just 24 years old.

While Mayfield's lack of production in 2019 is surely a bit concerning, especially considering all of the weapons at his disposal, we should probably give him a chance before we completely write him off.

Mayfield has also hardly been the Browns' only issue this season.

Cleveland has a myriad of problems on both sides of the ball, and as a result, the Browns are just 6-8 and have seen their playoff hopes all but dashed with just two weeks remaining.
