Hue Jackson did not exactly have a great time his last few years with the Cleveland Browns. The team was not winning games, at all. However, that does not mean everything was completely miserable. There was certainly hope at times. That included quarterback Baker Mayfield. When the team drafted him, that's when things were supposed to turn around.

Mayfield has not been seen as the most coachable and well-behaved player in the league though. He often says or does something that a large portion of fans simply do not agree with, and that's caused some issues.

With that in mind, Jackson talked a bit about the quarterback. In the quote, he highlighted some thoughts on the quarterback and maybe a bit about their relationship.

Jackson really seems to want to emphasize “the player” there when talking about never having issues with Mayfield. It's dangerous to speculate. But it sounds like Mayfield and Jackson maybe had some problems off the field.

Based on that quote, Mayfield was a good quarterback. He likely was happy to learn and grow too. Because all of those are facets of the “player”.

Clearly, Jackson had some sort of an issue with Mayfield “the person” though. Or else he would not have emphasized “the player” so much.

That being said, Mayfield is still young and can grow and mature. Meanwhile, it is positive news for Browns fans that Jackson believes he could still be a great player.

So the tools are there. It just sounds like there might be some maturing that Jackson still believes Mayfield has to make.
