It goes without saying that the Cleveland Browns have gone through their fair share of quarterbacks over the years. The 2017 NFL season was no different with rookie DeShone Kizer largely at the helm.
Despite the optimism head coach Hue Jackson displayed in Kizer heading into the year, it seems he could be ready to move on. With the Browns well on their way to one of the NFL's worst records, Jackson indicated that Cleveland will be eyeing the 2018 NFL Draft for their next signal-caller, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
“It’s not a good problem because that means you’re losing, but it’s a problem that in this situation, you want to have,” Jackson said. “We can’t have too many good quarterbacks right now on this football team.
“We have to and we’ve said it before, use resources at that position and go get the right guy that we feel comfortable with to pair them with some of the players we have here to come up with the best quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. That is just what you do.”
Although DeShone Kizer did show some potential at times, he largely underwhelmed in the Browns floundering offense. The second-round pick has thrown just six touchdowns to a whopping 15 interceptions. Furthermore, Kizer has recorded a league-worst passer rating (58.1) en route to losing all 11 of his starts thus far.
The Browns have been notorious for passing on bonafide quarterbacks like Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson. However, it seems Hue Jackson is reassuring the suffering fan base that he is willing to spend however many picks he needs to find the right man for the job. Fortunately, they may only need one with the potential influx of promising quarterbacks in the upcoming draft.
Whether or not Jackson will be around in the offseason to help select yet another QB, remains to be seen.
