It is no secret that the Cleveland Browns have been mired in mediocrity for quite some time now. However, the one consistent factor about their franchise has always been left tackle, Joe Thomas.

Unfortunately, Thomas is at the point in his accomplished career where he is contemplating retirement. While the Browns would surely love to have him back, head coach Hue Jackson is not pressuring Thomas to make his decision at the moment, according to Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk:

“I’ve talked to Joe Thomas several times, and I think Joe is going to make a decision here hopefully fairly soon,” Jackson said. “But again, it’s on his time. Joe has been a tremendous Cleveland Brown, and he’s done everything and anything we’ve asked of him, so I think it’s only right that we give him an opportunity to work through this and make the best decision for him.”

Thomas had announced that he would be taking the offseason to gauge whether or not a return was in the works. The ten-time Pro Bowler has endured his fair share of hard times with the Browns since being taken with the third overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. However, it does not get any rougher than being on a team that suffered just the second 0-16 finish in NFL history.

Furthermore, there is speculation that he may be leaning toward retirement due to his massive weight loss since the season ended. However, there should be little concern about Thomas' ability to get back into shape considering he has long been the gold standard at left tackle. That said, he could be waiting to see if the Browns can put together a solid squad by the time OTA's roll around.
