Cleveland Browns pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, but he would consider returning to the team for the 2022 season.

Although there was rampant speculation that he would opt to return to the Tennessee Titans, Clowney elected to instead sign a one-year deal worth $8 million with the Browns in the offseason. The veteran defensive end has been quite a reliable talent in the Browns front seven this season, as he has featured in 12 games and has recorded 5.0 sacks.

There is a possibility that the Browns' Week 18 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals could be Clowney’s final game in Cleveland. Still, he would be open to re-signing with the team, which he spoke further about during a press conference on Friday.

“I would, but we [with agent] have not talked about anything right now,” Clowney said. “Just finishing the season. We have a lot of guys on this team who are on a one-year deal, and they might be heading back or do not know what is going to happen in the future.

“Right now, it is just all about the next game, just trying to get through the season and doing what I can do for the team as of right now.”

At the least, the three-time Pro Bowler has much enjoyed his debut season with the Browns and would even campaign for free agents to put some thought into signing with Cleveland.

“I would tell them go there and it not always about what is going on in the city but the guys you play with make a difference to me,” Clowney said. “It does not matter what is going on because I spend all of my time with my teammates. I just feel like they make the difference and make the time and the season go fast. It has been one of the fastest seasons because of the guys I play with.

“A great group of guys. A fun group. The coaching staff is laid back. Everything has been going pretty smooth. … I have enjoyed my time and enjoyed being up here so far.”

Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett would be pleased to see Clowney re-sign with the team in the offseason, as he noted on Friday that he has “tried” to persuade the eighth-year veteran to stay put in Cleveland.

For now, Clowney will look to do his part to help the Browns pick up a key win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17. He is set to feature in this game after missing the Browns’ last two games following a stint on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
