Cleveland Browns defensive end Jadeveon Clowney made a boneheaded mistake on Monday Night Football against the Pittsburgh Steelers, pulling off Steelers wide receiver Chase Claypool's shoe and throwing it to earn himself a 15-yard penalty. The silly move extended a drive for Pittsburgh after it seemed as if Cleveland had made a big third-down stop, and the Steelers ultimately went on to score a touchdown.

The Browns wound up losing 26-14, and head coach Kevin Stefanski wasn't happy at all with Clowney for what he did. Via Marla Ridenour of the Akron Beacon Journal:

“Yeah, I mean, it's — you can't do that. I mean, you're hurting the team,” Stefanski said. “It's crazy. Not smart. You know, he felt like he was just — I'll let him answer it.”

Jadeveon Clowney doing his best Random Task impression was certainly uncalled for and simply added to the misery of a disappointing Browns season. Cleveland was already eliminated from playoff contention coming into this game, and Monday brought about another ugly performance in a season full of them.

In addition to Clowney's gaffe, Baker Mayfield was a total train wreck while consistently under siege. Mayfield was sacked a whopping nine times as his offensive line failed him time and again, though the quarterback also wasn't any good in general.

There was a lot of hope coming into this 2021 season for the Browns after their playoff appearance last season, which also featured their first playoff victory since the 1994 campaign. Instead, Mayfield has struggled mightily with injuries and is now facing major questions about his future.

Things certainly have not gone as planned, with Monday night's loss just bringing all these issues to the forefront. Clowney apparently did apologize to his teammates for his mistake, but it never should have happened to begin with.
