The Cleveland Browns have emerged as a team that could lure Jadeveon Clowney in free agency. After being reported as a team that is expressing interest in him, the Browns are now considered a ‘sleeper' team to sign Clowney, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
The veteran defensive end entered free agency with the idea that he could command a massive contract worth $20 million annually. However, the former No. 1 pick has failed to get any offers from teams that have reached that number. While speaking about Clowney's current situation, Fowler highlighted Cleveland as a team to watch for.
“Jadeveon Clowney — one sleeper team for them could be the Browns,” Fowler said Sunday morning on ESPN's SportsCenter with co-host Jay Harris. “I'm told that they have shown some interest in Clowney, and some people around the league believe they got closer than some other suitors to actually signing him at one point. Nothing happened, but that is something to watch.
The most interesting part of Fowler's comments was that the Browns seem to have come close to offering him a deal already. Nonetheless, nothing came of those talks, with Clowney still waiting for a lucrative offer.
Despite being active to begin free agency, the Browns still have $43.5 million in cap space, according to Spotrac. That is more than enough money to sign the former Pro Bowler to a one-year, prove-it deal in 2020.
Seeing that Clowney has actually lowered his asking price, it wouldn't hurt for Cleveland to make a run for Clowney. With that being said, it remains to be seen if the interest is mutual.
