The rumors have been floating around for a few days, but it appears they have become a reality. The Cleveland Browns are going to be keeping wide receiver Jarvis Landry around for a while. They’ve signed him to a five-year contract extension worth $75.5 million ($47 million guaranteed).

Browns general manager John Dorsey raved about Landry in a statement to the media (NFL.com):

“Jarvis Landry is the type of football player we want on this team for a long time. Obviously, he's an accomplished playmaker, that's why we went after him in the trade but in his short time as a Brown, we can already see the type of leadership and competitiveness he's going to bring to his teammates. We are very pleased that we've been able to secure him to a long-term contract.”

The logic must be that if he can catch 100 balls a year with Ryan Tannehill as his primary quarterback, he’ll be even better with the future superstar they are about to draft. Tyrod Taylor is not much of a passer. It would not be fair to expect a 100-catch season from Landry with him at quarterback.

The Browns will also need Josh Gordon to find his form again in order to keep teams from double teaming Landry every down. It wouldn’t hurt if they drafted a running back that defenses might be afraid of too.

So—yeah, it’s great that they signed Landry to a contract extension. Now they just need to find a quarterback that can get him the ball and a running back that will keep defenses honest.

Money well spent? Not yet—but it could be.
