Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield entered the NFL as one of the most polarizing players in recent history. It appears not much has changed going into his second year.

Baker Mayfield is coming off an extremely promising rookie campaign. According to Mike Sando of The Athletic, one opposing defensive coach shared some high praise despite some skepticism from the voters:

Multiple voters were skeptical of the Browns, pointing to other “dream team” scenarios that failed to produce the desired results. But they liked Mayfield a lot.

“I like his moxie, and on tape, when we played him, he made some throws where I took notice,” a defensive coach said. “He made a throw in the back of the end zone — I think it was against Oakland — and I was like, ‘For a rookie, for him to even see that and have the confidence to make that throw, that was a good throw.’”

There had been plenty of speculation regarding whether the Browns would take Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Although there was no doubt about his talent level, concerns about his boisterous personality raised some red flags. Fortunately, it was just the kind of swagger that Cleveland needed to get back on the right track.

Mayfield was certainly no stranger to making headlines in his rookie year. All the attention has only been ramped up now that the Browns have generated plenty of hype with the addition of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. this offseason. As a result, this could prove to be a momentous year for him.
