The Cleveland Browns put in another putrid offensive performance Monday night, in a 26-14 loss to the rival Pittsburgh Steelers. Tuesday morning, it was announced that quarterback Baker Mayfield is going to have shoulder surgery and will not play in Week 18.

Mayfield has been playing through a myriad of injuries this year. Early on this season, Mayfield suffered a torn labrum in hois shoulder. In October, Mayfield reportedly was dealing with chest and rib injuries. Then in November, he picked up a Grade 1 knee sprain.

The injuries clearly affected his play on the field. Mayfield threw nine touchdown passes to 10 interceptions over the last six games. During that time, the Browns went from top of the AFC North to be eliminated from playoff contention.

ESPN's Browns reporter Jake Trotter reported that the timetable for Mayfield's recovery from shoulder surgery has been revealed.

Mayfield reportedly will be able to return from surgery in time for OTA's next season. He will be entering the final year of his contract. Mayfield is scheduled to make over $18 million next season. That leaves the Browns organization to start making decisions on his future.

It's been reported that the Browns plan on bringing in competition for Mayfield next season. Cleveland is considered to have one of the best rosters in the NFL. They have an elite offensive line, elite running backs and a top 10 defense. Consistent, solid quarterback play is what the team needs and it is yet to be determined if Baker Mayfield can be that player.
