After a decades-long search for a competent player under center, The Cleveland Browns now find themselves in position to have a surplus of options. As a result, they have the luxury of focusing their effort to acquire other assets.

It was rumored that the Browns would be fielding offers for backup quarterback Kevin Hogan. According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Cleveland has now agreed to send him to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft:

Cleveland Browns and Washington Redskins have agreed to the following trade: Browns receive: Redskins 2018 sixth-round pick (188th overall) Redskins receive: QB Kevin Hogan

It goes without saying that the move is hardly a blockbuster. It seems Washington is simply looking to shore up some depth after making their own splash at quarterback this offseason by acquiring Alex Smith.

Hogan was originally taken in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs before he was subsequently released a few months later. He then signed with Cleveland's practice squad and was eventually promoted as the backup to quarterback DeShone Kizer prior to the 2017 season.

Hogan saw his fair share of action in relief of an injury-plagued Kizer last year. He threw for 517 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions in four appearances. He also managed to show off his running ability by taking 10 carries for 71 yards.

The former Stanford product is entering just his third season in the league. That said, perhaps Washington is hoping that some time spent behind quarterback Alex Smith can help develop him into a dependable backup option.
