Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield had one of the most impressive debut seasons in NFL history this past year, throwing a league-record for a rookie 27 touchdown passes.

So, how does Mayfield stack up heading into his sophomore campaign? Well, Sporting News has the 23-year-old ranked ninth among all signal-callers heading into 2019.

“This is not just more Cleveland hype for 2019,” wrote Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News. “Mayfield put together a terrific rookie season, one that could have been even better had Hue Jackson allowed him to compete for the job in the preseason, or had Freddie Kitchens been coaching him all the way. Now Kitchens is doing just that, and Mayfield has an elite No. 1 wideout in Odell Beckham Jr.”

Does Mayfield deserve such a high ranking this early in his career?

It's debatable, but there is no denying just how good Mayfield was in 2018, as he also threw for 3,725 yards while completing 63.8 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 93.7 to go along with his touchdown total. The Browns ended up going 7-8-1 this past season, marking their best finish since winning 10 games all the way back in 2007.

Cleveland has then gone on to have a very busy offseason, adding the likes of Beckham along with running back Kareem Hunt to bolster the offense. In addition, the Browns traded for linebacker Oliver Vernon and signed defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson.

In a tough AFC North division that includes the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens, it should certainly be interesting to monitor the Browns this coming season.
