The Cleveland Browns have already been linked to defensive end Jadeveon Clowney since last year's offseason, before he signed with the Tennessee Titans. The team's interest in acquiring the 28-year-old never wavered as he reportedly visited the Browns last week to hear their pitch for the upcoming season.

When asked regarding the team's “obsession” with Clowney, Cleveland.com analyst Mary Kay Cabot insisted that it is not the case despite the team's extensive efforts to recruit the three-time Pro Bowler. The team is definitely interested, but not tripping over themselves to sign him.

“I think ‘obsessed’ is too strong a word,” Cabot writes. “I think the Browns would like to sign him if he’s healthy and if the price is right. If he’s fully recovered from his surgically-repaired torn meniscus, he can be a force off the edge for the Browns, both in terms of disrupting the quarterback and stopping the run.”

“If Clowney, who turned 28 in February, checks out medically, I think he’d be a great acquisition, especially on an incentive-laden one-year deal somewhere around $6.5 million,” Cabot said. “The Browns liked him a lot last year and still like him if he’s good to go. He’d complement Myles Garrett well, and would flourish in Joe Woods’ defense.”

Clowney previously inked a one-year, $13 million contract to play for the Titans in the 2020 NFL season. His debut campaign with the team was marred by a knee injury which cut his season short and only allowed him to play in a total of eight games.

The South Carolina product eventually finished with 19 total tackles and a forced fumble without a sack recorded. Despite his meager numbers, Clowney still managed to make an impact and serve as a disruptive force for the Titans' defensive unit last season.

After his short contract expired, he will now be heading to unrestricted free agency where the Browns remain to be a potential landing spot for him. In the event that Clowney decides to take his talents to Cleveland, he will be joining forces with star defensive end Myles Garrett who will definitely wreak havoc in the league next season.

Certainly, Jadeveon Clowney would need to stay healthy in order for him to be a valuable contributor for a Browns squad that is looking to make it back to the postseason. Cleveland is hoping that the veteran defensive end could be the missing piece to their puzzle in a bid to make a stronger playoff push in 2021.
