Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is fine with ceding the No. 12 jersey to new Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, so long as Brady can help the team win a Lombardi Trophy.

Godwin spoke about the number change before he played Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Marquise Brown in a virtual, Madden 2o Super Bowl for “The Checkdown.” The Pro Bowler said No. 12 had been part of his identity as a football player but also acknowledged he had to “concede” the number once Brady signed with the Buccaneers (via Ryan Hannable of WEEI):

“I have been (wearing No. 12) since high school and it means a lot to me,” he said. “At first it bothered me a little bit, it was kind of getting at me because it is part of my identity, but when the GOAT comes calling you kind of concede to him. Like I said, hopefully I can get a ring or two or three out of that. I was more than happy to do it. I have a new persona for me, 1-4. We’re going to move forward and make something special with it.”

The Buccaneers opened with the fifth-best odds to win the Super Bowl in 2020. But with Brady now surrounded with immense talent at the skill positions, they could be as dangerous as any team in football.

Godwin will certainly be one of Brady's top targets while with the Buccaneers. The 24-year-old ranked third in receiving yards (1,333), fourth in receiving touchdowns (nine) and second in yards per game (95.2).

With Godwin and Mike Evans out wide, Rob Gronkowski running the seams and Ronald Jones II posing as a receiving threat out of the backfield, Brady will have his choice from a host of weapons with the Buccaneers. The result could be a ring in February, or so Godwin hopes.
