The Tampa Bay Buccaneers added some much-needed defensive help ahead of the 2019 season with the signing of former Denver Broncos linebacker Shaquil Barrett. The deal is a one-year contract worth $5 million.

Although Barrett's sack total has fluctuated since joining the league, he remains a solid pass rusher and could help the Buccaneers tremendously next season. Along with linebacker Lavonte David and Gerald McCoy, Barrett certainly helps a team with a poor defensive reputation the last few seasons. The Buccaneers have been awful defensively in recent years, but the team could be a lot different now that the coaching staff has been completely revamped.

Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will be seeking redemption after several disappointing seasons as a head coach with the New York Jets. While the Buccaneers might be a work in progress defensively, the addition of Barrett is a start for a team in dire need of defensive playmakers. Barrett had his best season in 2015 as a rookie. While his tackle and sack totals that season were career highs, meaning that he has fallen on comparatively leaner times in recent years, he could become rejuvenated with the Buccaneers.

A change of scenery is sometimes exactly what a struggling player needs. Now that he doesn't have to compete alongside one of the most elite pass rushers, Von Miller, Barrett may be able to achieve new career highs. The Buccaneers need all the help they can get. Barrett was likely signed to be an every-game starter. Barrett started only 15 times in his previous 61 NFL games, but that will surely change for him in 2o19.
