The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been very busy this offseason, but evidently, extending wide receiver Chris Godwin has not been one of their top priorities.

During a conference call with reporters on Wednesday, Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said that the team has not yet begun contract talks with Godwin, but that Tampa Bay does plan on locking him up at some point:

“First of all, we love Chris,” Licht said, via The Tampa Bay Times. “Everybody and anybody in the organization can tell you that Chris is a huge piece of this team, and Chris is an impact player at the position. I’ve personally told Chris we want him to be here long term and be a Buccaneer for life. In terms of when that happens? I can’t tell you right now when those talks will officially begin. But I do know that he is in our plans for the long-term.”

Godwin is entering the final year of his current deal and is slated to earn $2.13 million in 2020.

The 24-year-old is coming off of a breakout 2019 campaign in which he played 14 games and hauled in 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns en route to a Pro Bowl appearance.

Godwin, who played his collegiate football at Penn State, was originally selected by the Bucs in the third round (84th pick overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Given that the Buccaneers signed Tom Brady last month, acquired Rob Gronkowski via trade just before the draft and have made several other moves this offseason, you can understand why they may have dragged their feet on extending Godwin.

But this is something that should probably be at or near the top of Tampa Bay's to-do-list in the coming months.
