Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin is coming off a promising 2018 NFL season. It appears Tampa Bay will look to utilize him the same way the Arizona Cardinals use wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

The Buccaneers lost starting slot receiver in Adam Humphries to free agency. According to Greg Auman of The Athletic, general manager Jason Licht indicated that Godwin will likely fill in for him inside:

Interesting parallel from Jason Licht, saying Chris Godwin can play inside much like Larry Fitzgerald did for Arians in Arizona: “I'm not saying he's Larry Fitzgerald by any means yet, but play the role like Larry did in Arizona. That made (Humphries) a little easier to swallow.”

The departure of Humphries to the Tennessee Titans has left a major void in Tampa Bay's offense. He accounted for 816 yards and five touchdowns working primarily out of the slot. The Buccaneers are hoping that Godwin can make a seamless transition.

There is good reason for them to be optimistic about their plans moving forward. Godwin also enjoyed a bit of a breakout year after finishing the 2018 campaign with 59 receptions for 842 yards and seven touchdowns. Unlike Humphries, he was plugged in wherever the offense felt best. It seems his role will be a bit more clear-cut moving forward.

The Bucs featured a pass-heavy approach on offense regardless of which quarterback was under center last year. If Godwin can prove to be a viable replacement for Humphries on the inside, there is a good chance he follows up with an even bigger season.
