When ongtime New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady actually hit free agency this offseason, everyone expected Brady to get courted by a number of teams. Instead, it seemed a little quiet.

By the end, it appeared that the Patriots were only battling a few select teams.

However, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said on an appearance on the OMF on WEEI show this week that was not the case.

“There were a lot of teams that went through the conversation of if and when Tom Brady does hit the market, do we make a move. There were teams out there that had that conversation that you’d be surprised to hear. It wasn’t just a few teams … the number was bigger than people realize.”

Schefter didn't provide an exact number. However, it sounds like it wasn't just a handful of teams.

That makes sense. By the time Brady signed with the Buccaneers, it did like it was between maybe three or four teams. However, it's unlikely that the number was that low. Even if they didn't get deep into talks with him, you'd imagine a lot of teams would at least be discussing bringing him in.

Brady is a quarterback who could give almost any team an immediate upgrade. He can turn most teams into playoff contenders. And just off the strength of that, a lot of teams had to be considering Brady.

Not to mention the star power. He'd bring in ticket and jersey sales, and would help any team get some prime time games. Meanwhile, other players would definitely be more interested in signing with Brady's new team for a chance to be on the same field as the eventual Hall of Famer.

What's most interesting about Schefter's comments is that there were “surprising” teams that had reached out to Brady's camp.

Does that mean there were teams that already have star quarterbacks getting in touch with Brady? Or ones with young up-and-comers? Schefter's comments certainly create intrigue.
