The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense was shorthanded when they faced the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, with rookie safety Antoine Winfield Jr. sitting out the game due to an ankle injury.

The injury forced the Buccaneers to include undrafted rookie free agent Jason Hagan as part of the team’s active roster, a move which Fox Sports 1 host Skip Bayless didn’t appreciate. Bayless took to Twitter to question the move, believing that he would not fare well in his first career NFL game and even remarking on the fact that he played for Ohio and not Ohio State back in college.

But it turned out that Tampa Bay made the right move. Hagan’s contributions did not show up in the box score, but he helped the Buccaneers turn back Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, 31-26, to advance to Super Bowl 55. After the game, the 23-year old safety made sure that he got back at Bayless by posting a picture of himself holding the NFC Championship trophy.

Winfield is an important part of the Tampa Bay defense, as he played in all of the team’s regular season games, tallying 94 combined tackles, three sacks, four quarterback hits, six passes deflected, two forced fumbles, and one interception.

However, the team’s defense still played well in his absence, holding off Green Bay just enough to get them the victory and give them the chance to win the Super Bowl in their home stadium.

Hagan’s efforts in the NFC title game may not have reflected on the box score, but with the Buccaneers reaching the Super Bowl, he certainly surpassed Bayless’s expectations.
