It was a disappointing 2017 NFL season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to say the least. Tampa Bay made plenty of additions to the offense to help quarterback Jameis Winston take that next step in his development.

Needless to say, things did not pan out so well. Among the notable newcomers to suffer in the offense this year was wide receiver DeSean Jackson, who feels Winston just needs to get back to his roots as a quarterback, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times:

“I think he needs to continue to be what he was that made him be Jameis Winston,” Jackson said. “I think he has to come in there, which he is already doing and just being professional, and just go back to the steps when I was a young kid or I was in high school and just have fun with it. … “I’ve seen him play. I’ve seen him on the practice field, he has the leadership. He has everything to be their guy. It’s just going back, have fun and not trying to impress the world. Just be yourself.”

Winston largely stumbled out the gate before suffering a shoulder injury that sidelined him for a few games. During that time, the offense as a whole largely fluctuated. Winston finished the year with a career-low 3,504 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, Jackson failed to make his mark after he was brought in to help open the field with his explosive deep-ball ability. However, the speedy receiver was unable to etch out a solid role in the system, recording just 50 receptions for 668 yards and three touchdowns.

It was a disappointing year overall from an offensive standpoint for the Bucs. Fortunately, Winston has already shown he's capable of being a gunslinger in year's past which should still provide optimism for the future.
