It is no secret that the 2018 NFL season was a disappointing one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, it appears they are still optimistic about the future of quarterback Jamies Winston.

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Winston's future under center. Bucs general manager Jason Licht said during an appearance on 95.3 WDAE that he will be back next year:

Jameis Winston will be here,” Licht said. “We have him under contract for a year. He has done some amazing things for a young — 24, turns 25 in a week — quarterback that has accomplished more than most of the elite quarterbacks have at his age throughout … that timespan. There's a lot to like about Jameis. Jameis will be here next year.”

Licht's comments should hardly come as any surprise. The Bucs had reverted back to Winston as the starter down the final stretch of the season. following a few lackluster performances by quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The young gunslinger is entering the fifth and final year of his contract and is set to make just under $21 million for the 2019 NFL season.

Winston has largely failed to live up to the hype of being a former No. 1 overall pick. He threw for just 2,9992 yards, 19 touchdowns, 14 interceptions, and lost three fumbles in 11 games this year.
While he has shown flashes of promise at times, his inconsistency and inability to take care of the ball have raised doubt about his status as the franchise quarterback. Although Licht has committed to bringing him back next season, he did not give any indication regarding whether or not he would be the starter or his future beyond that.
