The Chicago Bulls have reportedly asked the NBA to remove center Omer Asik's contract from the team's salary, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.

Asik is battling arthritis and Chron’s disease. He was waived by the Bulls on October 21, 2018. The big man was scheduled to make $3.0 million in 2019-20.

Asik began his NBA career with the Bulls in 2010. He spent two years in Chicago before signing a three-year, $25.1 million deal with the Houston Rockets in the summer of 2012. The Bulls decided not to match the Rockets' offer sheet for Asik, who was a restricted free agent.

Houston traded Asik to the New Orleans Pelicans in the summer of 2014. He then signed a five-year, $58 million contract with the Pelicans in July of 2015. New Orleans traded Asik to the Bulls at the 2018 February trade deadline.

Asik has appeared in 471 games in the NBA. He holds career averages of 5.3 points and 7.1 points while shooting 52.8 percent from the field and 55.1 percent from the free-throw line. Asik hasn't played in an NBA game since April 11, 2018. He played 18 minutes in a Bulls loss to the Detroit Pistons. His career is most likely over at this point.
