The Chicago Bulls have traded point guard Jameer Nelson to the Detroit Pistons for forward/center Willie Reed, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical. As part of this deal, Detroit gives Chicago the right to swap their 2022 second-round picks.

Nelson will beef up the Pistons backcourt with Reggie Jackson out with an injury while Willie Reed will join the frontcourt rotation in a limited role for the Bulls.

Reed had seen only nine minutes of action since being part of the blockbuster trade that sent Blake Griffin to the Pistons last month and was recently suspended for six games after a domestic violence incident with his wife that took place last August.

Nelson started the season with the Denver Nuggets, but was soon cut after a one-on-one battle between Jamal Murray and Emmanuel Mudiay for the starting point guard spot. He later landed with the New Orleans Pelicans and became a trade chip in return for Nikola Mirotic. He had yet to play a single game with the Bulls since joining the team.

The Pistons have been looking for an answer at point guard since Jackson's injury, shuffling Ish Smith in-and-out of the starting spot in hopes to find the right fit. Nelson, a veteran in his 13th year in the league, should prove capable of running an offense and generate the desired chemistry coach Stan Van Gundy has been looking for.

The Bulls are likely to use Reed at power forward and center to fill in their needs, with an empty spot after the departure of the sharp-shooting Mirotic.
