The Nebraska Cornhuskers are still currently employing Tim Miles as their head coach. However, according to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, the school has already begun to check out the grass on the other side to see if it's greener, and former Chicago Bulls and Iowa State Cyclones head coach Fred Hoiberg is considered the front-runner to take over the program once Miles is let go.

Nebraska missed the NCAA Tournament this season, finishing 18-16 and earning a bid to the NIT. Miles has been in charge of the Huskers since the 2012-13 season, collecting one NCAA Tournament appearance in 2013-14 but failing to win a game. Nebraska is the only Power Five conference program which has not yet won an NCAA Tournament game. If Nebraska athletic director Bill Moos does fire Miles and replace him with Hoiberg, many people in the college basketball industry would expect Nebraska to win an NCAA Tournament game before too long.

Hoiberg was fired by the Bulls back in December, after the team got off to a 5-19 start to the season. He had made the jump from the collegiate ranks to the NBA in June of 2015, leading Chicago to a 115-155 record, including one playoff appearance in 2017.

Prior to join the professional ranks, Hoiberg cut his teeth at his alma mater of Iowa State, where he starred on the court from 1991-95. After being named the head man prior to the 2010-11 season, he reeled off four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2013-14. Nebraska has never earned a Sweet 16 bid during the modern expansion of the field.

There are still multiple steps to occur before Hoiberg can be considered the next coach at Nebraska, primarily because the school still currently has Miles in place — and has not made a decision on his future — ahead of an NIT first-round matchup against Butler on Wednesday.
