Chicago Bulls rookie forward Lauri Markkanen managed to be right around his average of 15 points during a 32-point loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, but he did in efficient fashion, needing only seven shots to do so.

Head coach Fred Hoiberg will make sure that never happens again.

Markkanen was 3-of-7 from the floor (all three-pointers) and a crisp 6-of-6 from the line, but very short of the 13 attempts per game he was getting before this game, which has frustrated Hoiberg.

Asked if there were any specific spots he'd like his 7-foot rookie to get the ball, his response was concise enough.

“Yeah, there are specific spots — all of them,” Hoiberg said, according to K.C. Johnson of The Chicago Tribune.

Markkanen is not only coming off an impressive freshman season at Arizona, but a stellar appearance at this year's EuroBasket, leading his Finnish national team through stern competition.

“A lot of times that's an innate quality that you either have or you don't. And Lauri's got it,” Hoiberg said of knowing when to be aggressive. “He has a toughness streak to him. He's not afraid of the moment. He doesn't lose his confidence when he misses a few shots. He keeps taking them when he's open. Those are great qualities as a young player.”

The 20-year-old could have very well played himself into a starting spot, a blessing in disguise stemming from the fight between Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic — which should only favor his growth with the team as the franchise looks to rebuild with him as one of the centerpieces.

“We do need to add more actions for him,” Hoiberg urged. “He was thrust into a role that wasn't going to happen initially with the incident that happened right before the opener. Now it's about adding after seeing what he can do on the floor.”
