Chicago Bulls head coach Jim Boylen says the gradual development of rookie point guard Coby White has been the most pleasant surprise for him thus far in training camp.

White, who was drafted with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, is going to challenge Kris Dunn and Tomas Satoransky for the Bulls’ starting point guard spot, although Dunn is widely expected to be the opening day starter barring something unforeseen happening.

Coby White averaged 16.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists last season in college while shooting 42.3 percent from the field, 35.3 percent from beyond the arc and 80.0 percent from the free-throw line.

During Summer League, White put up 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists for the Bulls while shooting 33.7 percent overall. White shot just 10 percent from beyond the arc. Perimeter shooting is an area of White's game he's going to have to work on in the NBA since he won't be able to always rely on his speed to score.

The Bulls aren't going to put too much pressure on White. The team won't be asking him to carry the load on offense like a lot of clubs do in the NBA with their high draft picks.

White's goal for this season is to improve every day, get stronger and show the Bulls they have a point guard for the future.
