What a game the other night for Chicago Bulls rising star rookie forward Lauri Markkanen against the New York Knicks. In a thrilling 122-119 double-overtime victory for the Bulls at legendary Madison Square Garden, Markkanen led all scorers with a career-high 33 points and became just the second seven-footer ever to hit eight three-pointers in a game. He also had a dunk that nearly caused Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg to lose consciousness.

Whose company did Markkanen join? None other than Dallas Mavericks longtime power forward Dirk Nowitzki.

After the game, Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg praised Markkanen for his outstanding effort and performance down the stretch on Wednesday night. Via an article that was written by Brian Mahoney of The Associated Press:

“For Lauri to come in on the big stage, the World’s Most Famous Arena, and hit eight threes and play against arguably the best power forward in the league in Porzingis, play 46 minutes and hit those big free throws late, just tells you everything you need to know,” coach Hoiberg said.

Markkanen is also making history as a rookie this season, as well. According to a tweet from Micah Adams of ESPN Stats & Info, Markkanen is currently making more three-pointers per game than any other rookie in NBA history.

Markkanen, who is averaging 15.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game this season, is making 2.4 three-pointers per contest. The previous rookie record was held by Portland Trail Blazers star point guard Damian Lillard, who averaged 2.3 made three-pointers per game back in the 2012-13 NBA season.

The Bulls, who are now 15-27 after they started off the 2017-18 season with a dismal 3-20 record, will next host their Central Division rival in the Detroit Pistons (22-18) on Saturday night at United Center.
