Michael Jordan added insult to injury once his Chicago Bulls had clearly overcome the Detroit Pistons, claiming they were the undeserving champions in back-to-back seasons.

The “Bad Boys” had climbed to the top of NBA glory with a sound offense and a punishing style of defense, bouncing Jordan and the Bulls from the playoffs in three straight seasons. Armed with a 3-0 lead in the 1991 Eastern Conference Finals, Jordan darted one last shot at his hated rivals before putting the last nail in the coffin:

“The Pistons are undeserving champions,” Jordan said on the day between Games 3 and 4 in Detroit in 1991, according to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports. “The Bad Boys are bad for basketball.”

The ring leader Isiah Thomas didn't make mention of it, but Jordan’s comments played a big factor in why the Pistons starters chose to leave the floor with 7.9 seconds left in Game 4 once they had been all but swept out of the playoffs.

During “The Last Dance” documentary, Thomas argued that the Pistons only did to the Bulls as it had been done to them in 1988 when they finally overcame the Boston Celtics to get to the NBA Finals. Footage showed Thomas chasing down Kevin McHale for a handshake before the Celtics gaited out of the arena.

Those Pistons were already wearing down with age and a Thomas wrist injury was supposed to end his season early. Thomas had also sprained his foot in the semifinals against the Celtics, which only added to their embarrassing exit.

Michael Jordan still holds a grudge with those Pistons of yesteryear and that much is evident during Episode 4 of the series. He seems consistent in his thought that avoiding handshakes was the wrong move to make, something that further soured his relationship with Thomas as the leader of that team.
