You got to admire the optimism of Robin Lopez. With the Chicago Bulls set to start a new season with a roster that looks closer to a G-League squad than an NBA title contender, Lopez knows that expectations aren’t particularly lofty for the team. That doesn’t mean, however, that the big man would just throw his hands in the air, sit back, and let the rest of the NBA treat the Bulls its personal punching bag.

In an interview with Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, Lopez bears how his mindset is for the upcoming season.

‘‘I’ve seen a lot of positive signs from this team so far,’’ Lopez said. ‘‘When we’re out there, we play together, we push each other to play harder, play with a lot of energy. And those are all great things. I really think if we play hard, we play together, we can surprise some people, for sure.’’

Robin Lopez sees the glass half-full and his confidence might have gotten a big boost following the Bulls’ preseason victory over the defending Eastern Conference champions Cleveland Cavaliers last Tuesday. Sure, it’s a preseason game, but for these Bulls, a win is a win, and any form of victory is going to be welcome going forward, as they don’t project to win plenty of games in the 2017-18 campaign.

The Bulls are in a rebuild after parting ways with Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, and Jimmy Butler over the offseason while accumulating younger pieces, but the future remains cloudy for the team that underachieved with a 41-41 record last season.
