When ESPN announced its upcoming project about the 1998 Chicago Bulls back in 2018, basketball fans around the world waited with great anticipation.

The network spurred more excitement this past December after releasing an official trailer for “The Last Dance,” a 10-part documentary series that was slated to release in June.

However, there is a chance the project could be arriving sooner than expected.

Sports networks are scrambling to find adequate coverage in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, which has forced the closure or suspension of nearly every major North American sports association.

It seems as though ESPN are preparing to release “The Last Dance” in advance, as they have been airing a preview for the Bulls series merely saying it is “Coming Soon:”

Ben Koo of Awful Announcing reported ESPN is not generally so vague in terms of their original programming, which might point to the release of “The Last Dance” in the very near future:

The other interesting thing to note here is that ESPN has been showing an awful lot of commercials the past few days for The Last Dance, which really wouldn’t make sense if it was indeed coming in June. While ESPN no longer has games they need to promote, and we’re seeing 30 for 30 and other programming getting a lot more promotional love instead, it wouldn’t make much sense to be hammering The Last Dance so hard 80 days out.

The 1997-98 season was the final year of the Bulls dynasty in the 1990s. It was a year rife with drama, as the likes of Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and head coach Phil Jackson were all in the final year of their respective contracts.

The Bulls would defeat the Utah Jazz to win the NBA title that season, but tension between the front office and the players resulted in a breakup.

Basketball fans can only hope the rumors of an early release are true.
