Imagine being called for a foul — without actually ever touching the opposing offensive player.

Such was the case when the Chicago Bulls matched up with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night. The Bulls' Denzel Valentine was miraculously called for a defensive foul without actually being anywhere close to the Thunder's Chris Paul.

There are a lot of ticky-tack fouls called in the NBA these days. But this has to take the cake for the most phantom foul in the NBA this season — and maybe ever. Valentine was nowhere near the play — in fact, he was in the right corner of the video defending another player.

This was likely a case of a major mistake by referees mistakenly thinking Coby White was Valentine, but it's still shocking to see at the professional level — especially when you consider it was Valentine's fifth personal foul, just one away from fouling out of the game.

A very bad and egregious mistake by referees, indeed.
