Cain Velasquez was born in Salinas, California but was raised in Yuma, Arizona where he attended high school at Kofa High School.

In his high school years, Velasquez was a two-sport athlete. He played football for three years where he played as a linebacker and was the captain of the team. Cain also played wrestling for three years where he was a two-time 5A Arizona Wrestling Champion. He compiled a record of 110-10 in his four years of wrestling.

He then attended Iowa Central Community College for a year where he wrestled for one year and won the NJCAA National Championship in the heavyweight division. Velasquez transferred to Arizona State University where he became part of the Sun Devils wrestling team.

In three seasons of wrestling at ASU, Velasquez had a record of 86-17 as he placed 5th in the country in 2005 and 4th in 2006. He also won a silver medal in the Pac-10 Championships in 2006 and a gold medal in 2005.

He graduated from Arizona State University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.
