The Arizona Cardinals made a big hire recently, finding a replacement for ex-head coach Bruce Arians in Steve Wilks. The team is not done yet tinkering with its coaching staff, though, as it is being reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport that Wilks intends to get the services of Mike McCoy to be Cardinals’ new offensive coordinator, via NFL.com.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that McCoy and the team are working out a deal this week to make him the Cardinals' new offensive coordinator.

Mike McCoy has been out of work since November of last year, when the Denver Broncos handed him his walking papers after the team went on deflating six-game winless streak. The Broncos had to deal with an unstable quarterback situation, but that did not matter much in terms of McCoy’s job security in Mile High City. Nevertheless, Denver finished the 2017 campaign just 27th in scoring offense (18.1) and 17th in total offense (324.1).

Unlike Wilks, McCoy has had head-coaching experience before, as he spent four seasons (2013-2016) guiding the San Diego Chargers from the sidelines. The 45-year-old McCoy kicked off his NFL coaching career as an offensive assistant for the Carolina Panthers in 2000.

In Arizona, McCoy will inherit an offense that averaged only 18.4 points per game and just 314.1 total yards per contest. It’s unclear who the Cardinals’ starting quarterback will be next season following the retirement of Carson Palmer, but for now, the team has the trio of Drew Stanton, Blaine Gabbert, and Matt Barkley to choose from.
