Albert Pujols announced that he is going to retire at the end of the 2022 MLB season. Pujols has enjoyed a storied career that will earn him a place in Cooperstown someday. He spent the first portion of his career in St. Louis before signing with the Angels. However, Pujols made his return to the Cardinals this season and will retire with his original ball club.

But Padres superstar Manny Machado believes MLB should be honoring Pujols in a special manner. Hall of Famers such as Derek Jeter and David Ortiz received farewell tours with opposing teams even bestowing gifts upon them during their final seasons. Machado believes the Cardinals' future Hall of Famer should be receiving similar treatment.

“It’s kind of (bovine dung) that teams are not giving him a farewell tour,” Machado said. “I’ll tell you that right now. Why? Albert has been the best player in our generation to ever play this game, and to see him doing the things he’s doing — I mean, it’s just unbelievable. It’s freaking special that St. Louis gave him the opportunity to come back here and finish off his career as a Cardinal.”

Albert Pujols is not the same player he once was. But there was a time when he was considered the best player of the 2000's. Although they have a different skill set, Pujols was to the 2000's what Mike Trout was to the 2010's. And Pujols clearly still commands the respect of younger players around MLB such as Manny Machado.
