Kliff Kingsbury's first season as an NFL head coach with the Arizona Cardinals is in the books, along with Kyler Murray's rookie year at quarterback. Another new piece of the Cardinals' organization is defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who joined Arizona in 2019 after two seasons as head coach of the Denver Broncos.
According to Kingsbury, the Cardinals will retain Vance Joseph as defensive coordinator in 2020.
“I never wavered in that,” [head coach Kliff Kingsbury] said. “[Joseph's] approach, knowing what I know of him and watching him work, the things I saw from the first day I was with him, I knew I wanted him to be here.”
“He understood where we were at and he knew that it was going to be a work in progress,” [Kingsbury] said.
The Cardinals only finished 5-10-1 in the 2019 NFL regular season, but most analysts see the NFC West franchise on the up-and-up, especially with Murray under center providing a dynamic, dual-threat version of shepherding Kingsbury's unique, college-grown offense.
Nonetheless, the Cardinals will need the defense to take another step, too, though, and that means Vance Joseph has to improve. Arizona finished with the worst team defense in the league in terms of total yards allowed to opponents.
The Cards, with Vance Joseph in charge of the defense, gave up the second-most passing yards and ninth-most rushing yards.
However, despite the best efforts of Vance Joseph, many around the sport have pointed to personnel on the Cardinals' roster not rounding out a talented unit for the coordinator to mold into a better defense.
Anyway, there's always next year, especially with Vance Joseph back.
