The Arizona Cardinals will release veteran running back Adrian Peterson. This report comes by way of ESPN's Adam Schefter on the mean streets of Twitter.

The 32-year-old still had one more year on his two-year, $7 million deal that he had originally signed with the New Orleans Saints last offseason. He was traded just four games into his very disappointing stint with the Saints to the Cardinals for a conditional sixth-round pick.

In six games with Arizona, he notched 448 rushing yards on 129 carries with a pair of touchdowns as he became the Cardinals' lead back in the absence of David Johnson. Unfortunately, he missed the last month of the regular season after suffering a neck injury.

Just last month, the former league MVP said he still wants to play 4-5 more years:

“I think I would want to play maybe four more years, four to five more years,” he said. At the end of the day, I know I can play. If you watch football, as far as being an evaluator of talent, if a guy has something left in the tank, I feel like he was able to see that I can still play the game.”

With Peterson soon to be a free agent, it will be interesting to see what NFL teams are interested in the aging running back's services. Furthermore, if there is a demand for his skills, what type of money Peterson can see being hurled toward his general direction on the open market.

Obviously, the Cardinals are cutting him in an effort to remove some dead salary cap weight.
